Anupam has been born with this condition and his life has been revolving around getting blood transfusion every single month. He is alive because of that!
Anupam is suffering from a deadly condition known as Thalassemia Major;
Children born with thalassemia major usually develop the symptoms of severe anemia within the first year of life. They lack the ability to produce normal, adult hemoglobin and experience chronic fatigue. They may also fail to thrive. Two major consequences of the genetic defect of thalassemia are severe anemia and expansion of the bone marrow in the body’s effort to produce more red blood cells. This leads to poor growth, impaired physical activities, facial and other bone deformities, fragile bones and enlargement of the liver and spleen. If left untreated, it will lead to death within the first decade of life. The only treatment to combat severe anemia is regular blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy.
“The pain that my child has to go through every single month while getting blood transfusion is beyond imagination. A few days before the transfusion, Anupam completely takes to his bed. He would want to play but his weak body couldn’t support much movement. Even the slightest of activities would make him go breathless or have blackouts. Every single transfusion of his terrifies me because her survival rates keep dropping. He wishes to attend school but I had to stop his education due to health issues. I pray to god that no one should go through such suffering.”
