CAUSES OF CHILD MORTALITY IN INDIA
The major causes of child mortality in India as per the SRS reports (2010-13) are: Prematurity & low birth weight (29.8%), Pneumonia (17.1%), Diarrheal diseases (8.6%), Other non-communicable diseases (8.3%), Birth asphyxia & birth trauma (8.2%), Injuries (4.6%), Congenital anomalies (4.4%), Ill-defined or cause unknown (4.4%), Acute bacterial sepsis and severe infections (3.6%), Fever of unknown origin (2.5%), and all other remaining causes (8.4%)
In India, more than 40,000 to 50,000 new childhood cancer cases are detected annually. The study by Lancet stated that of the childhood cancer patients in India, less than 20,000 get access to treatment. Blood cancer is most common in children. It can be either lymphoma or leukemia. Brain cancer is also witnessed, along with bone tumours. Neuroblastoma is another common type of cancer seen among children.
Lack of diagnosis, misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis, obstacles to accessing care, abandonment of treatment, death from toxicity and higher rates of relapse are some of the causes for the burden of deaths due to cancer among children in low-middle income countries, said WHO. This inequity in access to quality healthcare further threatens the attainment of universal health coverage
